Mute will be releasing the long-awaited Fad Gadget by Frank Tovey project on 11th September 2006. The 2 DVD and 2 CD package features an exclusive new documentary covering Tovey's life and career up to his sudden death in 2002. It will also include rare and unreleased tracks and live footage of legendary performances, as well as classic songs recorded both under his own name and his alter ego, Fad Gadget. Put together by Frank's family in conjunction with Mute, utilising the Mute and family archives, this collection features the very first Fad Gadget demos and footage of the rebirthed Fad Gadget supporting Depeche Mode in 2001. Fad Gadget was the first signing to the Mute label where he released his debut single, "Back To Nature", in October 1979. Recorded using a drum machine and synthesiser a string of classic singles followed including "Ricky's Hand", "Fireside Favourite" and "Collapsing New People". After four albums as Fad Gadget, Tovey dropped the moniker and recorded a further five albums for Mute under his own name and with the Pyros throughout the '80s and early '90s. He continued to experiment with many different styles, mixing electronics with Rock, Punk, Folk and Dance Music. The full content of the set is as follows: DVD disc 1 will hold the "Frank Tovey by Fad Gadget Documentary" with TV performances and promos such as "Ricky's Hand" (Neon, a short film by Alex Proyas), "Life On The Line" (Karrussel TV performance), "Collapsing New People" (Formula Eins TV performance), "Luxury" (Karrussel TV performance) and so on. Also included is the short film Grand Union (+ hidden easter egg). The second DVD will hold live performances recorded allover the world. It also includes recordings made during Depeche Mode's 'Exciter Tour' where Fad Gadget acted as support act. All in all 39 live tracks in total. The 2CD set includes rareties such as "The Liberty Tree" (Single Version) and collaborations with Boyd Rice ("Easy Listening - Ex 2 Mkultra", "Immobilise") and several unreleased tracks such as "A Place With The Pigs (theatre music)" and "Sleeper". The 2nd CD holds unreleased demo tracks from what can be considered Fad Gadget's best of. A must have for every true Fad Gadget fanatic.

Posted by: crasis on Jul 18, 06 | 8:39 pm This is the best news I've read in years. Frank's death was an absolute tragedy and shock to us all, but his music and talent will live on. Good show, Mute. Now let's see the entire back catalogue remastered a la The Cure. |
Posted by: on Jul 16, 06 | 12:32 pm Cant wait for this one. Frank was truely unique, may his memory live on. |
Posted by: Neuroticpuppy on Jul 11, 06 | 8:06 pm Hell yeah! Fad Gadget is really all that matters, forget the crap of the 90's. This royal release can't come soon enough. But the double CD that came out in 2002 was also mighty fine. Hopefully we get videos from the first two albums. I'd even buy it just to watch him performing "Lady Shave". Swallow it! |
Posted by: AirCrashBureau on Jul 10, 06 | 11:35 pm It is a good thing to see that at least some of Frank's liveperformances will finally be released on DVD. I have had the luck to see him perform live three times and there were and are no artists like him . He was unique. He was Fad Gadget/frank Tovey and is dearly missed even after all these years since he passed away so unexpectedly. I play his records almost every week, which I rarely do with other bands. They have the unique quality of never getting boring. |
Posted by: snarkIII on Jul 10, 06 | 1:29 pm respect is due. Frank could cut it without ice, without films, without military clothes, without bdsm masks, without zillions of bad remixes, etc..., without so many of the articificial artefacts most bands need(ed) today (or yesterday) to disguise an appaling lack of creativity. |
Posted by: joepetr on Jul 10, 06 | 12:32 pm I do have the 4 Fad Gadget albums, so I'm not sure about this one. |
