Funker Vogt issues statement regarding yesterday's Out Of Line drama

The German band Funker Vogt has issued a statement after the news broke yesterday that Out Of Line is not all too happy that the band appointed Sacha Korn as their new frontman.

Yesterday the band basically said that the band was all about "no politics just music", but that simple statement was not longer sufficient after the news caused an uproar on Facebook and Twitter. Gerrit Thomas, René Dornbusch and Sacha Korn have all issued a statement which you can ready below. We corrected some grammatical errors to keep it easier to read but didn't change anything of the text itself.

In a reaction Gerrit Thomas says: "That the choice to ask Sacha Korn to be the new singer of Funker Vogt would generate some waves was clear at the moment we decided it. That it would come in like a bomb shell is surprising us, since we have thought the scene we are in since nearly 20 years wouldn't be so superficial. So let’s talk about some basics concerning the band.

Those who know Funker Vogt understand quite well that decisions are not just made out of the blue. Everything with respect to that issue has started upon a private, likable level. Meaning between Rene, me and the thought asking Sacha to join the band. I know Sacha through some work we have done in 2011. What I did not know was a reputation addressed to him by left wing internet freaks. Anyway we considered this disposed reputation against him rather as narrow-minded than objective.

We are not out to confront or provoke. And so we have decided not to announce his entrance to Funker Vogt, as it was clear that some people would abuse exactly this situation to push Sacha in a corner in order to damage Funker Vogt. Especially broken hearts and aggrieved souls are open for such attacks. We are really sorry, that our management and the label were unconsciously pulled into that situation! But for above mentioned reasons we did not even want to involve you into this, plus we would not have thought this was going to be so huge. Because in the end in doesn't matter who sings in Funker Vogt, Pat the postman or Sacha Korn, than even Sick Man. There is no ideology or something clause to that in our lyrics. There is no glorification or agitation in contrary to the campaign that was started against us by some people. And here are some words from Sacha that people are talking about obviously without even taking a minute to check his reputation."

René Dornbusch had the following to say: "I am honestly shocked! What the hell is going on here on Facebook!? Since yesterday I am receiving emails from friends and other people who just don’t get the point what the problem with Funker Vogt is? Those people who demand tolerance for themselves are not giving any back to others? The entire dark scene is claiming tolerance towards themselves. Why is it not possible to pay it back? Especially when all so called 'facts' are based on stupid pronouncements."

And Sacha Korn says the following: "Thanks for the many supportive phone calls, email & texts that I have received from all corners of the world congratulating me on joining up with Funker Vogt. Wow this happened faster than I could have imagined. Just to make things clear: yes I am proud of my country and I love my home "come on man we just won the world cup", the same pride I felt years before when the wall came down. As my many friends that I have met through music and travel, who are proud of their land and culture know I am proud of mine. Don't judge me, but get to know me, please don't hesitate to contact me to clear up any untruths you may have heard. I look forward to hearing from."

The statement ends with a video documentary on Sacha Korn which you can see below:

On a side-note, we at Side-Line have been pigeonholed by some with a very 'own agenda' (get the cheek in tongue quote?) in the extreme rightwing camp because we have reported on the matter and because we seriously doubt the validness of an organization like Netz-gegen-Nazis. We think that you, the reader, are smart enough to judge for yourself if a band suits your political taste or not (lyrics may be a very helpful tool) without having a witch hunt. In all fairness, it's your choice too if you enjoy the work of Wagner or Sergei Eisenstein's "The Battleship Potemkin", or both... And misquoting us (or on purpose taking our quotes out of context and in some cases even laying words in our mouth which we never said) is not a very intellectually correct way to discuss this. But then again, that is usually the source for all drama. (...)

Out Of Line not happy with choice of new Funker Vogt singer Sacha Korn

Drama in Deutschland where the Out Of Line label says it's not happy with Funker Vogt's choice to appoint Sacha Korn as their new frontman.

Out Of Line: "As the management of Funker Vogt has been keeping the identity of the group's new front man "Sick Man" a secret from everyone, including us, as part of the new band concept, we had to learn from the internet that he is in fact the quite controversial German singer Sacha Korn. We are now waiting for a statement from the management. We are not interested in a collaboration with Mr. Korn."

Korn got caught in earlier drama when 3 of his songs ended up on a 'Schulhof' CD released by the Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands back in 2011. Korn's songs featured among other tracks by such bands as Noie Werte, Alte Freunde, SZU and so on. Previous compilations had included bands such as Spirit of 88 and H8Machine to name just two. He stayed in the controversy as his Facebook posts are considered to be extreme right wing by left wing organizations such as Netz-gegen-Nazis.

Truth to be said, some of these Netz-gegen-Nazis members claim that Stalin and the communism was the best that could ever have happened to the world and they fail to mention that the 'Schulhof' CDs also featured work from Helene Fischer, Andreas Bourani, den Toten Hosen, Unheilig and so on (it's highly doubtful that these bands are right wing) (Correction: these bands seem to have been part of an anti extreme right wing CD). Not really the best people to get a lesson in history from (without defending anyone here as some seem to think). Funker Vogt issued a statement saying: "No politics just music."

It's quite unsure you'll be getting your next Funker Vogt CDs from Out Of Line. So, what do you think? (...)

Silent Wave debutes single featuring production work by Paul Kendall - interview

(By our Norwegian correspondent Jan Ronald Stange) Sweden keeps feeding the music scene with excellent electronic music, and Silent Wave band members Tildeh Hjelm and Hans Olsson Brookes from Gothenburg are no exception. Their debut single "Dream on, dream on" have been out for a few weeks, been getting great reviews, and now also have a video supporting the track.

Silent Wave had the multitalented Paul Kendall (sound engineer/producer/mixer/composer) as collaborator on the single, doing additional sound design and mixing, and we asked both parties why and how this came about.

Hans: "I contacted PK a year ago, asking if he could listen to and give some feedback on the five songs we had made thus far. Simply because I above all like what he did with Alan Wilder in Recoil, but also like his earlier works. Paul gave them a listen and returned some good, constructive feedback. This February I asked if he wanted to pick a song to remix, and he chose the track “For you”. We really liked the remix, and during the summer we began considering having him mix one of the first song we wanted to release. “Dream on, dream on” was chosen, because the original was a bit to poppy and gentle, and the songs we’ve done later were heading towards a darker and dirtier electronic sound. We hoped PK could turn the songs towards this sound, but still keep some of the poppiness of the song. We were really pleased with the result, and it’s now released as a single, with the b-side “Only love, nothing more” mixed by me."

PK: "Last February I was contacted by Hans from Silent Wave asking if I would be interested in remixing one of their songs. I get quite a few requests during the year for remixes, and as a lifetime is limited sometimes I say yes and sometimes no. It is normally quite a simple decision. First there has to be something in the song that makes me want to listen to it again. If the voice sounds like Dave Gahan I immediately say no, as he already exists in a quite famous group. The Silent Wave song I chose was called "For You" and Tildeh, the principal vocalist, does not sound anything like Dave J.

But seriously; the single most important factor for me in any song-based music is whether the voice is pleasing to me. It doesn't necessarily mean that the voice has to be technically perfect (many people have technically good voices) but it must have an individual character. For example, Nick Cave doesn't have a technically good voice, but, for me, he has a voice with extraordinary character. With the song "For You" the blend of Tildeh and Hans voices was excellent and I was immediately attracted to the song.

The remix was not difficult, half speed loops and added distortion is always a good starting point for me, and so it was. After the remix Hans asked me to mix the main version of another song "Dream On, Dream On". The decision to work on this track was even simpler as it featured a double track Tildeh voice. There is a sublime sadness in her voice which I find completely irresistible and the voice harmonies on "Dream On" are so beautiful. For the music my approach will always be, start with simplicity and mould the sound into something original. Hopefully the mix of "Dream On" has fulfilled its promise."
