Remember that young teenager in the Twisted Sister video “We’re not gonna take it”? Well, he now makes music under the name of Dax (his real name), yes, K-Pax is close… Straight from the USA, this Austin based artist - Marketing Consultant during the day for a number of hi-tech companies, musician during the night - brings a cross-over genre that blend several styles, from electro to funk and pop, with guitars that rule. We got in touch with the man himself who explains his work and his surprising musical combinations that is expressed on his 7 track EP “Dax: The EP”. (By Emmanuel Snyers)
SL. What’s your musical background?
D. My parents are both in show business so I was always around music. My mother is a voice teacher, and my father is a well-known television director named Marty Callner. He worked with Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, Jerry Seinfeld, Garth Brooks, Britney Spears, Cher, etc.
As a kid my mother gave me piano lessons and voice lessons and I also studied drums, guitar, violin and trumpet. I kind of suck as an instrumental player so I really think of myself as a singer. I do still take guitar lessons though to learn as much as I can about music. I really started as a rock 'n' roller before I got into more industrial/EBM stuff. That is why I think you definitely here a meld of those styles in my music.
SL. I understand you’re involved in several projects, you used to run an independent record label and you were the executive producer for an album of music by porn stars called Porn to Rock., can you tell us more?
D. Actually I have dropped all of my side projects and I am only focused on DAX stuff. I am doing everything I can to be successful with it and finally things are starting to happen!
SL. This CD has serious Industrial, EBM elements, but when I look at your Top 100 albums all time I don’t see many of those elements?
D. That is a funny question because I agree - the music that has influenced me and inspired me most is really different than what I write and play. I think somehow I have funneled my all-time favorite albums into a new sound. But I do here those influences in there, even if no one else does. Artists like Jane's Addiction, Prince, Peter Gabriel, Cocteau Twins - they have moved me incredibly and they have touched my soul, so they are definitely ingredients in my soup.
SL. What are your inspirations?
D. (Smiles) I am inspired by sex and food and politics and human ridiculousness and love and anger and power and triumph and truth. I am an absorber of culture and an observer of humanity and I find the details of our daily lives to be fascinating. And while I am never bored I do find solitude and time to be really inspiring as well.
SL. Can you tell us more about your lyrics? How important are the lyrics for you, especially for this kind of music?
D. Writing lyrics is my greatest challenge and what always takes the longest in my songwriting process. It's odd because if you sit me down at a computer and I can write and write and never stop - but I am extremely critical of my own lyrics and I don't feel like I have really reached a level that I aspire to. It's hard because on one hand I want to be really interesting and articulate and on the other I don't want to be pedantic or obnoxious. I
do think lyrics are critically important, especially in this kind of music where the lyrics really do have to reflect the tone of the instrumentation. My lyrics tend to be about the grandest themes - life, death, sex, power. I do have a quirky lyric or two and a couple of really personal songs - though I suspect a listener would not realize it unless they really studied the words.
