Signed to the Hungarian label Advoxya, the Moscow based act Wavefall so far released two albums, "Huge frustration" in 2006 and now since a few days you can also enjoy the band's most recent output, "Heartstarter" featuring 16 tracks of pure brutal electro in the vein of such bands as The Psychic Force and related. Consisting of the duo Slava (aka Vyacheslav ) who takes care of the vocal work and Tat'yana who plays keyboards with the band since the year 2000, Wavefall is part of a young but energetic generation of Russian underground artists raisin a very own Russian industrial scene. Check the band's website at www.wavefall-music.com or at www.myspace.com/wavefall . You can order their CD at the Advoxya online shop. (By Bernard Van Isacker)
SL. Slava and Tat'yana, please explain what your musical path has been so far. I gathered that you have been active since 1999 but not always with the same sound...? When was the sound of the band defined?
W. Starting from 1999 we have recorded several demo albums, both bringing light electronic music similar to Orbital and Banco de Gaia and pure industrial. In those early years we didn't manage to generate much interest with our music to be honest. And we actually think that we still haven't settled down on a particular type of sound, as it always depends on the mood. So you might expect some changes in the future..
SL. You are both hardcore gamers so it seems, that was in fact also how you both met. Does industrial music and gaming go hand in hand?
W. Yes, we enjoy gaming… a lot! Sometimes a good game is a stimulus for writing music. Chop up a pile of zombies and write a good song. (laughs)
SL. So how did you end up on Advoxya?
W. Our demo disk landed on the Advoxya label desk, and Dima turned out to be the guy who was the first to offer us adequate conditions in order to release our material.
SL. How easy was it getting in touch with the industrial scene back in the 'old days' of the iron curtain? For instance how did you get to hear such bands as Front 242 and so on? I don't think they were played on the national broadcast…
W. (Laughs) If you mean contacts with the foreign scene, well, there weren't simply any when the "iron curtain" was in place (but that was almost 20 years ago). It was very difficult to obtain music of such bands. Only in the late 90's the situation changed for the better with the spread of the Internet in Russia.

SL. I am surprised that most Russian EBM acts never seem to include traditional elements in their music. Is there an aversion for it or why is it? Although I must add that you used samples from "Legend" from The Bulgarian voices Angelite & Huun-Huur-Tu in your past material.
W. To be honest, we have asked this question ourselves. We have already made the first steps by using the famous Tuvinian guttural singing, which is one of the cultural gems of our country. We think many more things are to come in the future.
SL. What would you consider to be the biggest musical change since your 2006 album "Huge frustration"?
W. We decided to make the new album "Heartstarter" more positive and cheerful than "Huge frustration" was.
SL. On "Heartstarter" Wavefall reminds me of such old school acts like Force Dimension or yet The Psychic Force. Am I right to think they were of some influence to you both? What attracts you in that old school scene?
W. In our opinion, Force Dimension's album "Deus Ex Machine" is one of the best albums in this 'school'. Of course, these bands influenced us, often with a dose of nostalgia that is…
SL. Next to Wavefall, you also started Wavefall Light... quite funny to choose that name in fact. Did you need to express the softer side from your sound spectrum as well? Is this project a part of Wavefall? I guess so or you would have given it another name no?
W. True, the name is rather funny (smiles). It's still a working name though. Wavefall Hard vs. Wavefall Light (laughs). We've always been subject to this artistic duality in fact, just like we love the music by Banco de Gaia, Ultrabass, Orbital, Dead Can Dance, etc.
SL. Btw, any plans to visit Ukraine again after having spent 2,5 months in jail over there for what was considered contraband of psychotropic chemicals while it was just your medication for which you could provide the medical documents?
T. At the moment all charges have been lifted from Slava. This month (March 2008) we have sent documents to our advocates for the reparation of moral and material damages so we will see how things get solved.
SL. As far as we can gather here, the Russian audience does not always has the means to buy CDs, truth or just a fake reason to not buy goods but instead go and pirate the cds?
W. In the last couple of years the level of living in Russia has increased, but, still, many people cannot afford to buy a licensed CD, especially in the more regional cities. Until recently, Russia was full of pirated discs, but the situation is changing for the better I feel. At the moment the main threat comes from people distributing music and movies for free over the Internet.
SL. To end, you played one of the first electro fests in Saint Petersburg, how was that?
W. It was fun. The festival's organizers made a maximum effort to organize this event. We think that there are worthy EBM bands in our country, e.g. The Pulsar, Nec Plus Ultra, Id Molotov, etc. Time will tell what will happen to those.
