I have used a few music player from Winamp to Sonique in the late 90's. I have to say Winamp has stood the test of time. But there is also Mediamonkey, which is really great for Podcasting and ripping music. Itunes is one of the most horrible players out there. So what is your choice?

I do not need any bullshit. Just a prog that plays all kinds of audio formats and shows and allows me to modify all the ID3 tagging options quickly and painlessly. Also easily supports encoding and decoding of different audio formats because I like to have a lot of my audio in FLAC.

I have never had any difficulties with Foobar like I have with every other audio program.

iTunes constantly fucked up my iPod library and album artwork, it deleted playlists and created other that I didnt want. It was a total mess.

With winamp that doesn't happen.

Foobar or VLC, but mostly Foobar. Winamp hogs up too much memory, Windows Media Player is garbage and I don't like iTunes (except for the iTunes store).

Winamp is a trendy, cool looking player with skins support. VLC is my favourite video/dvd player but it really sucks for audio playback. If you are looking for a feature rich player (which supports easy management of multiple playlists and has an awesome built-in id3 tag editor for example) then try out foobar.

IMO Winamp sucks the ass of George Bush.

For serious. Time Warner is a shithole. The guy that did Foobar was an employee of Nullsoft prior to the Warner buyout. Thus actuating a shitload of memory munching plugs that really aught to be transparent. Plus a three version plan, the most obvious corporate slap in the face action. Why do I need to register? Why do I need to search of updates all the damn time? Annoying

Foobar2000 is a free open source idea. Totally customizable with user interface and shortcut control. Huge amounts of information supplied on every file on a click. You may have no idea what is hidden in your ID3 tags. Customizable freesource apps through Foobar and 3rd party. It's not a ridiculous streamlined spaceship design. It is not aesthetically magnificent. But I would rather opt for usability over a pretty picture anyway.

My biggest concern is playing music while I do artwork. Doing art I have several apps going at one time. I found that many audio apps would get wrecked when I was rendering images. Foobar works seamlessly with my other apps. End of story...

The fact that Traktor (or at least, Traktor 2) can't read iTunes files is bullshit...
If I rip my CDs to iTunes, I'd like to be able to practice my DJ sets in Traktor with them. At this stage I have to re-import the albums as mp3, which uses extra hard disk space..
But yeah, apart from it's stupid file format, iTunes is fine.

Actually, there is a program for Mac that works with Itunes files. It's actually DJ program with two decks that actually requires you to beatmatch (unlike traktor).

I think it's called "djay" or something like that.

yeah i agree the newer versions of winamp with the problems you detailed are pretty wack. the old 2.6+ versions are pretty great though, not much memory usage, no bloat, no stupidness.

@version-yep, I agree. But then I miss the expanded features of Foobar that I mentioned. But it is true, if the prog works for you, that is what matters.

Foobar and AIMP2 all the way.

Winamp is total uber crap.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIMP
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foobar2000

They are both FAR BETTER then Winamp, but AIMP2 has some problems related to the functioning, but Foobar has a long curve of learning.

But Foobar2000 is definitely the best player around... people just need to have patience to learn everything about it.

Geeze dude, relax.

Its been 3 years since you actually used Foobar2000... it got better, trust me.

If you dont like it, well - try AIMP2. Has few bugs, but is also better then Winamp, and it looks glossy and whatshitnot like Winamp.

But Foobar is Da Shit.

I barely use it for more than management for the iPod til I bricked it, and now for the iPhone.

If you're on windows, Quintessential player performs much more consistently than winamp. It has some good features like coverting audio to ogg format and requires much less space than I Tunes.
