This popularity contest is ridiculous and serves no purpose. I am honored Vendetta didn't make this list. The last thing I would want is to conform to the standards of the people who come up with crap like this. It has about as much credibility as the DAC charts.

Side-Line amuses me. You do not seem to realize how cluttered and confusing their news page is with so many different focus topics and scattered google ads. Then you treat people like idiots when they cannot figure out the system.

You should have made it a separate webpage and then given people the option to put in their own suggestions. Joke suggestions could be easily deleted and you could tally new suggestions into selection boxes as they came about.

also- keep in mind I am not criticizing your use of the ads- I realize they are an important factor to keeping your web system up and running. But some things should be done in a separate portal without all the distractions.

I wish I could believe a survey like this is totally unbiased, but given that it's from the same guy/people directly behind Side Line *and* Alfa Matrix, I just can't help but think the results will end up being skewed. Kind of like how when you go to Iso Tank's website, their supposed Top 10 Best Sellers list ALWAYS has at least 4-5 Dancing Ferret releases in it, no matter how old or dated they might be. Weird coincidence considering both businesses are run by the same guy. Actually, it seems to apply to every label/mailorder who like to pretend that they're totally separate entities. I think the only one that keeps things fairly accurate and doesn't care about stroking it's own ego is Metropolis Mailorder considering how many times their Top 10 list hasn't featured even one Metro release.

But have fun voting. :)

Let's take it easy, it's a fun initiative, and even if it's not perfect, at least it has the merit of existing and keeping our scene active.

No, I agree, it's a cool idea. And, if it gets repeated next year, hopefully some concerns will be addressed. But it's pro-'scene' and pro-music-listener, which is always a good thing.

I understand that a line has to be drawn somewhere, and that little labels such as mine often have to be omitted lest the list get ridiculous. Hence why I said "don't take this the wrong way".

Considering that independent artists and labels greatly outnumber the established ones I think this sort of thing has the potential to alienate newcomers from musicians to labels to potential fans. Yet if it helps promote the magazine by preying on signed artists and mindless types who only listen to what the established labels tell them to... I guess it's a good move. I just see it a lot like Nike and Tommy Hilfiger to be honest.

I wouldn't expect machineKUNT to be mentioned considering the lack of releases. That's just silly.

I was stating objectively that I thought this sort of thing would alienate independents and newcomers. If you choose to read more into it than that it's not my problem.

And considering that the machineKUNT compilation had releases from artists on Alfa-Matrix, COP International, etc. I obviously like a lot of the artists on these labels to begin with. I simply don't think the idea of a popularity contest related to name brands is a wise move to make if the idea is to introduce new people to this magazine.

Not sure how this is complaining or being "butthurt." (isn't internet slang dynamic these days?) It's what I would have said face to face to Side-Line as my opinion on the manner. Though if this ends up being a good idea and bringing more people in as opposed to alienating them I will happily consider myself wrong.

punk, goth and techno were all counter-cultural social moovments, industrial was (from what i have read at leasrt) an arts moovment based on punk, it may be worth hanging about to see if a counter revolution can remove the paracitic blight of 'fashon' from an otherwise sound discource covering everything from dada to the ritualisation of the violation of our cultural taboos.

Did i use those words anti-establishment and rebellious? No, i believe i didnt, and does this make your statement void ? Yes, i believe it does. Underground doesnt imply those things

"Underground is mostly taken over by mainstream and commercialized"
Did a shitload of industrial bands suddenly get signed to commercial labels? nope
Did the industrial sound get copied in popular music, like rap has? nope

I just meant to say that industrial remains small, and that you can forget about making loads of money 99% of the time

@ out out : here's what we have sent:

Side-Line offers FREE bannerspace - check here how to get it

Dear label,

As we informed, Side-Line magazine has started its 2008 voting for best label (and best magazine) of 2008. We are not only offering FREE reduction codes for several online mailorders shops (Isotank, Music Non Stop and Infrarot) for everyone voting BUT we also offer FREE bannerspace to the first best scoring 4 labels.

The bannerspace has a value of 200 EURO per banner and equals 1 full month display on Side-Line, so we are pretty sure lots of you will be interested.

If your label is not among the ones that have been nominated, no worries. Send me a mail at info@side-line.com if you want to be included next year. From all the contacts I will get, 1 will be selected to get FREE bannerspace as well this time.

People can vote right here: http://www.side-line.com/news_comments.php?id=37917_0_2_0_C

We hope you enjoy this extra !

Kind regards,

coool deal..we didn't make the top 20!!
now thats true underground man!!!:-))))))) I said it! thanks for listening and not voting for us..

we don't do this for high school popularity contests...
we release music we like and know is better than it gets credit for, but whatever...I like lots of the labels on that list and some I don't care for...

so what will labels do in the future as the CD is close to buried now?
how do we get bands to sign and say ..."right on dudes...we are gonna release your shit for "free downloads" you wanna sign with us? we are the real deal!!"...

thats the future for all labels.,..I hate to say..but its true....oh well..at least no more overhead or losing money or filling our houses with CD's instead of chairs, and nice stuff...like a bed...lolzzzz

Tommy,

DSBP landed on spot 39 with 210 votes. You were ahead of such labels as:

PROGRESS
BETONKOPF MEDIA
M-TRONIC
PRUSSIA
BRUME
DAFT
DIVINE COMEDY
SOME BIZARRE
HALL OF SERMON
KLANGDYNAMIK
REPO RECORDS
DECADANCE
RUSTBLADE
...

With 180 votes more you would have made it to the top 20.

we know its all about the Franklins man..;-)..and no worries...we know we don't have money, but definately have great releases, and our fans/supporters let us know..and the the rest pirate and file share...

I never asked anyone to vote for us anyway, cause for me these polls aren't really important... i mean is there a trophy you guys made for AM or something? I would love to see it...or is it just bragging rights "in teh scene"?

but, yeah, its surprising to see some labels up there that don't have many good releases out though, but all it takes is telling all your friends to vote over and over, and it just wasn't something I worried about.
its nice that some did,as I didn't expect any to...back to work here...

so why does sideline keep promoting them? he seems happy to plug them and take his affiliate money.

this is me calling him out to do whats right and support his scene, by not plugging them until they work to resolve the issue. basically the entire userbase of this site is against them or was screwed royally by them, so its a bit screwed up that he is on their side.
