What's so bad about it? Except it being overused of course. I think if you can include it as part of the music/sound, it's cool.

Why don't people use gold crushers in industrial music?? they would seriously have the heaviest beat ever!!! http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/73/AdelongOldGoldOreCrusher.jpg/401px-AdelongOldGoldOreCrusher.jpg&imgrefurl=http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:AdelongOldGoldOreCrusher.jpg&h=600&w=401&sz=74&hl=en&start=11&um=1&tbnid=Cj6TyU0rVn6DoM:&tbnh=135&tbnw=90&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dgold%2Bcrusher%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26sa%3DN

Well when the grinder is part of the sound, like it was with Terrorfakt @ the last Kinetik, it's actually quite cool.
People like the visuals too so I don't see anything wrong with it if that's what you are trying to convey on stage. Jun 19, 08 | 6:52 am

Hah, even The KLF used an angle grinder. Then again, they had just about everything but the kitchen sink in their Stadium videos.

it's a no no guys,
as a sound? well ok, i can accept that.. (not that i would put any of MY mics near an angle grinder, but maybe that it's my limitation) as a rhythmic thing maybe.. but as pyrotechnics? shock value??? bah Jun 19, 08 | 8:53 am

angle grinders are ok. a cheap thrill. I think if they're integrated into a larger theatrics setup than they can be cool. but used alone they don't really do anything e.g. if that's your only gimmick than its going to be pretty lame.

1) Sumez already won the thread by a memetic Scooter/KLF reference. And Scooter does not rip the KLF off, they're very reverent towards the kickass that is the KLF.
2) So, we're moving on from complaining about fake blood to complaining about sparks? How are you guys making your live show visually appealing? A trash bag full of green Jell-O and a wrestling contest? C'mon, enlighten us as to how to make a show interesting. Jun 19, 08 | 10:19 am

thats right, fuck angle grinders.
i use a grinder in our shows. trying to stand out a little. One of our drummer's eats light bulbs on stage. We also smash bottles over our heads, cut ourselves with the glass, i hung myself from the lighting rig at one show, til i turned purple and passed out and fell down. we go on stage to have a good time, we arent gonna stand behind a pair of laptops, some bands do it, thats their dig, and as long as they are having fun, im all about it. im a loud, loud, boisterous guy, so of course my stage persona is that times ten. we bring 2-3 drummers, 2 keyboard players, a guitar player, and shit, we are gonna have J. playing a theremin at the next show. people paid some money to get in, somtimes they have paid alot of money to get in. they have EARNED the right to be ENTERTAINED, thats what we do, we are entertainers. If people arent coming up to me, talking about the show, saying they had a great time and will come again, i have failed them. as long as we get it signed off, ill be breathing fire at the allentown show. depends on if they allow me to do it. they allow the grinder because, its not a fire hazard. i couldnt light a ciggarette on fire with the sparks from a grinder. but it all "fits" too, i dont grind to any song, i grind to two specific songs in two specific parts. its heavy as balls in those parts, and its got a bridge. so there was too choices, i fill it in with something entertaining, like the angle grinding, or we have a keyboard or guitar solo. we did it with a keyboard solo in the begining. i would get a great tone and tear it up. I use a grinder, sawzall, cutting and brazing torches, etc all at work, so i apply what i do during the day to what i do at night. If people don't like it, or are bored with it or whatever, stop buying tickets and coming. Oddly enough, it seems like we sell more and more tickets to everyshow, so maybe some people dig what we are doing. honestly though, i dont feel that they are played out, or over used. i hadnt seen them in years on stage, so i definitly didnt feel like we were copying anyone else, or doing something played out. sure you can google and pull up bands using a grinder, you can pull up pics of a horse fuckin a gril too, doesnt mean its happening on stage everywhere. it seems coincidental though, that jaws has been pushing myparasites lately on here, and then this post. are you talking about us? since im the guy doing the grinding, id like to know. angle grinders are the industrial equivalent of the explosions bands like Kiss, Alice Cooper or AC-DC used in the 70s.. they're cheap, smelly and blah i even used them back in the days, not with x** mind you, a different project, but they're definitely not entertaining for me. yeah sparks yeah excitement yeah burned plastic smell! and honestly Eddie it has nothing to do with you in particular, if you feel touched by my distaste for angle grinders as stage tricks, well.. tough luck Jun 19, 08 | 10:50 am

x**_Mrk: no mics involved. The instrument that was being grinded was a bass costructed of metal, and was plugged into the mixing board. Hundreds of people at the festival thought it was cool so why not.
What's better, watching some fatass(me included) just jumping up and down behind a laptop and keyboard? I think it depends on the band and the visual aspect of what they are trying to go for. I think keytars and gasmasks on stage are much more cheesier. what's FAYGO? Jun 19, 08 | 12:23 pm

For me, it depends on its usage. I don't mind grinders if it has something to do with the music (Babyland and older SMP actually used grinders live as a percussive component to the music - along with classic bands like Neubauten and Test Dept.). If your shooting sparks just to look SHOCKING and DIABOLICAL, try something new as it's been done to death.
However, I'll take grinders over fucking fire spinners anyday... Jun 19, 08 | 12:51 pm

We have been using a circular saw with metal cutting blade onstage and on recordings since 1989. The audio of the saw is all over our first 7" single and several of our full-lengths.
We still use the saw live when it is a part of the actual audio of the original song (such as "Dismissal"). The saw is always mic'd and adds a very strong visual and sound element to our performance. I first saw a circular saw used live in 1985 by the bay area band The Beatnigs (an amazing band...). They opened for Big Audio Dynamite and used it only as a visual element. I loved it, but I always thought it would be even better to hear it as well. When we first started 'playing' we used a saw with a SM58 duct taped to it and then running to a DOD distortion pedal. For many years we experimented with fire onstage as well; It became too much of a liability, though - the clubs hated it and we would get sick from the smoke night after night. The saw, however, remains... Jun 19, 08 | 1:14 pm

Nobody puts Babyland in a corner! Anyone that's been doing hardware *as the sound*, especially for the last decade, is grandfathered in. @ dino velvet "One of our drummer's eats light bulbs on stage. I used one one time, as part of the drum rig when Caustic played at HoB in Chicago with KMFDM and Combichrist. Clamped it to the stand as another drum, tapped it gently on the 'hat' beat for one song.
Never tap a grinder wheel. Apply to solid surface gently. Sounded and looked good until the grinder wheel shattered and threw parts.. somewhere. I don't know. No one was harmed and I never got a bill for anything, and I didn't have to pick grinder fragments out of my cock, so I guess it was all ok. Definitely a live and learn night. =P Anyway, people seemed to enjoy it as part of the overall set. Someone threw tighty whiteys up on stage for us. Hawt. Jun 22, 08 | 5:16 pm
