"Living On The Ceiling" is not cheesy. Their cover of "The Day Before You Came" is a little cheesy. "Lorraine's My Nurse" is a little cheesy. But that, and "Blind Vision" - not cheesy.
If you're gonna talk Missing Persons, let's not forget "Walking In L.A."! Another guilty pleasure: "Tesla Girls". Not that all OMD is cheesy, though! Apr 30, 08 | 12:39 am

@Storm:: Agreed, it all gets lumped into the generalization of "80s music is so cheesy" - but yet only some was (some music of every are is cheesy...! "Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree" "Puff The Magic Dragon" "If You Wanna Be My Lover", for example) - and thusly, I don't think some of your listed ones are cheesy at all. TFF? Even "Shout" is strong enough not to be pure cheese. :)

totally agree- to me eighties music isnt cheese (well, Mister Mister possibly lol...) and is actually quite good, in fact for me in terms of consistency it was my favourite decade for music. 80s influenced a lot of the synthpop stuff thats around nowadays so for me it was an important decade. Im always hearing 80s music referred to in the media as being godawful and I dont get it. Problem is people get influenced and start to believe it. It seems that if you were around in the 80s you arent considered a credible artist these days. Its really unfair cus there were some real good bands around in the 80s. May 01, 08 | 12:02 pm

Any time I even mention to anyone that a lot, and I mean a lot, of my favorite music is from the "80s" I get that reaction too - "but isn't it all so cheesy?".
Sure, "Hold Me Now" is kinda cheesy, but "Living In Europe" isn't. To me the decade is also more defined as, like 1977/78 to 1988/89 as far as a span of time containing an "era" of music. May 01, 08 | 12:12 pm

The 80's was when most of your popular music was fun. It became very visual because of MTV..remember when they used to play music videos 24/7?? That's how I learned about many British metal bands, like Girlschool, Iron Maiden, etc..
And there is nothing wrong with Pat Benatar. I love her songs, especially her cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights". I was going to add DEEE-Lite's "Grove is in the Heart", but I think that was early '90's. May 02, 08 | 11:07 am

Baltimora--"Tarzan Boy" and that other horrible hit which I thankfully forgot.
Orange Juice Jones--"Walking In The Rain" I saw you... and !him..... :-( Kylie Minogue--"I Should Be So Lucky" & "The Locomotion" The unquestionable truth: most Stock, Aitken & Waterman produced acts were pretty horrible, yet commercially very succesful. Cheesy synths and incredibly ugly drum computer sounds and patterns. No wonder most people think the 80's were cheesy. May 03, 08 | 9:28 am

Murray Head sings that song, ShadyDarkLady. Quite a fitting last name for a mention of "massage parlors" in that song. :0)

Looking at the responses it is funny to see that everybody has a different opinion of cheesy. Kate Bush, Yazoo cheesy? Really?
Murray Head. I agree to that. May 06, 08 | 5:41 pm

I don't find Kate Bush Cheezy at all. I think she's strange/quirky and I love that about her.
I forgot to mention Laura Branigan's "Self Control". I love that song, and I remember how MTV banned the video because it was too dirty. The funny thing back then, was soap operas were much worse than that video! I wonder what an Electro or Industrial "One Night in Bangkok" would sound like? May 07, 08 | 10:58 am

Kirsty Maccoll - "A New England". Well, it's not cheesy, but I forgot how great it is. Billy Bragg's version doesn't suck either. ;)
We used to sing in the dead of winter "I don't want to change the world - I just want to heat New England". Good times. May 09, 08 | 8:28 pm

I love that song! I'm actually more partial towards the Billy Bragg version, actually. But Kirsty sings it so earnestly, and it's hard to resist.

hmm...i don't consider some of the songs listed here to be cheesy at all....i ran/running up that hill/one night in bankok/take on me/rock me amadeus especially TFF!
my definition of cheesy would be..."mickey" by toni basil...or "come on aileen" (the horror!) so to be honest i can't come up with any "cheesy" songs that i like...ok i'll say JCGE...or duran duran's "planet earth"... but for the cheesy song that never was...try "pop goes my heart" from the movie music and lyrics...absolutely incredibly cheesy..but wonderful :) May 09, 08 | 11:25 pm

I love Stevie Nicks. Some people think all her songs would fit in this category. If only I had the equipment and know how, I'd try and remix her songs. I'd love to hear an industrialized hard version of any of her songs.

I could lie and say I don't like it, but the truth is I freaking love Martika's "Toy Soldiers".
A lot of people are mentioning new wave acts. There was nothing cheesy about Peter Schilling or Bronski or anything like that. For true cheese, you have to go towards the teeny bopper mainstream. Feb 06, 09 | 2:30 pm

I always thought I really liked it, but heard it recently and the bloom was a little off the rose. Don't know exactly why. Well, I'll pull it off the shelf in a few years again, I'm sure. Feb 06, 09 | 2:49 pm
