They don't hate you. Ask each band if you were wondering.

Both Rotersand and SITD are really huge in Europe, in the USA not so much. They plan tours for N.America and are disappointed that promoters are willing to pay so little for them. Promoters will pay so little because the promoters don't want to lose their shirts. Sadly, most promoters know that booking a live show means they will lose money, which is OK. Losing mega money is not OK. Booking Rotersand/SITD = Mega Money.

I offered SITD $7,000 to play in 2006 (for a one off). Their agent literally laughed at me, because it was too little. Keep in mind that a rule of thumb is that a bands guarantee is @ half of the total cost to do the show (venue rental, hotels, PA, Equipment, hospitality...). So we are talking about a total package of like $14,000 – just for SITD. Assuming a $10/head admittance fee, that means attendance of 1,400 people just to break even. Please raise your hand if you think SITD can pull in those numbers in your town. ----and keep in mind, this offer was REJECTED.

While I have no direct knowledge, I hear that when VNV Nation tours in the USA, 500 people is the high mark for their attendance, but more commonly they draw 200-300. Without a doubt they are the biggest draw in our 'scene'.

A funny side note, when Rotersand dropped out of the SITD/Rotersand tour, my bid for SITD/Haujobb/Soman was $3,500. Sadly, my bid was probably the highest they received. I had learned not to offer crazy money. Tour was canceled due to lack of interest on the part of the promoters.

These bands do eventually come over and play. What happens is they realize that they will never build a huge audience in North America without touring. They can not ask for crazy money to tour without first having that huge audience. They suck it up and play for peanuts, or they only stay 'big' in Europe.

Guys, I am telling you: the business model sucks at all levels in this scene. Clubs lose money, Bands lose money, DJs lose money, labels lose money, festivals lose money, magazines lose money, record stores lose money.... You only do it because you love the music, not because you want to make money. There are exceptions, but they are few and it's usually because of very unique circumstances. Even so, the exceptions are not getting rich; they are getting by.

The sum of my story is this: I think SITD is not interested in playing N.America at the moment because the money is not there. They may come around eventually, but only after they realize they can not charge $3k+ a show. While they may deserve that amount, it will never happen.

VNV Nation had 2200 people at the last Los Angeles gig (and Skiny Puppy was also playing that night and had about 800). The last Combichrist show in Los Angeles did 1000 people, and there was another stop on the tour that did close to the same. Our De/Vision / Necessary Response gig a couple weeks ago did over 400. Off the top of my head, we've done over 600 people for Impeartive Reaction, Babyland, Monolith, and Icon of Coil over the past 2 years, and sold out a 550 person venue for Assemblage23 (2x) and the Covenant/IR/Rotersand package.

Sum of my story is, lets not sell ourselves short.

Just getting a venue with legal capacity of 2,200 is really hard, in my experience. And as we know, if you sold 2,200 tickets that means you needed capacity of at least 2,500 to accommodate the free loaders. At that level we are talking about arenas.

destroid is not over yet. both tours were kind of stressful. for destroid i spend basically every second day on airports, which is fucking annoying. but driving for 14 hours a day isnt fun either. so I will decide after the phoenix show, which should be fun. one thing I know, I feel more comfortable, with my band on stage (the full haujobb or destroid line-up) I am not a big fan of the one singer, one keyboarder constellation. but who i cant afford to bring my band with me, damn!!!

Fat City is notorious for their bad sound, and last night their sound guy truly outdid himself in that regard.

yes, last night's show was certainly...epic fail. actually, to clairify, the show itself was fantastic, but almost everything around it was fucked up. the sound was kind of insanely bad.

i had a good time nonetheless, as usual.

Little tip about hash cakes: Just start off with one first, wait about an hour, see how you feel. Don't eat 15 in one go, or you WILL see the devil, and he'll try and rip your heart out through your kneecaps.

this kind of diary is fun and allow us to see things "from the inside" ;-)

if you would know the inside, you would never want to tour!! hahaha.

yeah I guess a lot of tireness and long journeys...but a lot of good memories too for your old days !

I bet it feels good to be back. I just got back from an 1800 mile trip myself, complete with a cracked radiator half-way through. That was fun!
