I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I've been meaning to get back into the Alien series and want to know what people think. What's the best one? I've seen the first 3 and they were all dope, but in different ways. Wasn't one of them by the same guy who did 'The City of Lost Children'? The third one I also remember as being quite awesome.

Discuss. Oh yeah, why isn't anyone posting anything? I'm bored and you guys are forcing me to create my own amusement by starting foolish threads such as this one.

Definitely Aliens.

Alien Resurrection was okay, but not up to the standards of 1 - 3. I really hated the CGI aliens.

Uh, if you count the first movie ("Alien: The Eight Passenger"), it's of course the best one BY FAR. The others are hardly interesting for more than simple action entertainment.

The fourth movie (Resurrection) was done by the same guy who did City of Lost Children, yes. He also made Delicatessen and Amelie.
I think his style is very recognizable in Resurrection, and he uses a lot of the same actors used in those other three movies. I love his style, but the movie isn't really anything special. I don't think Aliens or Alien 3 are much better, though.

It depends on best, for "Most Entertaining" I would say Aliens, hands down. But "Best Story" or something, I would say the original Alien.

Aliens is the shit, but it lacks the same suspense and story of the first one. But the first one is a bit slow.

Alien 3 is tolerable when you watch the 3 hour directors cut. It comes together a lot better.

Alien Resurrection is something I would watch on TV if there was nothing else on. Id never put it on through sheer free will, though. Never.

Equal split between Alien and Aliens, for different reasons.

Alien 3 is good but flawed and was hacked around by the studio, pre-release. Killing off Hicks and Newt in a massively arbitrary crash was pitiful. Alien Resurrection looks great but fails miserably with the human/alien hybrid and all the "genetic memory" hockum.

@ Sumez, Where abouts are you? Alien is only subtitled "The Eighth Passenger" in a few countries, I believe.

Denmark, I think the full Danish title is "Alien: Den 8. Passager" which translates to the same. People usually just call it "Alien" though, I don't think it matters. :) I just wrote it to make clear what title I was talking about.

Like, the second movie isn't called Alien 2 og Aliens 2, just "Aliens".
The fact is I don't really like to think of the Alien movies as a series. The first one is a superb suspense/horror movie and stands alone quite well. But as part of a movie series, considering the other Alien, Predator, etc. movies it's reduced to simple sci-fi entertainment for teenage boys.

Oh, and, yes, I really like AVP better than Alien 4. Its not a glitch. Everytime iI see that Alien/Human Mutant Monster, it makes me want to kill Jeunet (the french director).

And: A little piece of Alien/Inudtstrial music trivia:

It must have been around April 1995 where we (Offbeat at that time) launched an April fool joke on the german press and told them that haujobb would compose the soundtrack for Alien 4. We created a somewhat elaborate story how Gale Anne Hurt passed on haujobb records to Ridley Scott who was to direct Alien 4 again, and that the soundtrack would be released not by OffBeat but by Sony Columbia.

Everybody believed it and it was repeatedly printed by the german music press. HAujobb then releassed a virtual piece of ALien soudtrack as "A4 Main title" on the EP "Frames".

My favourite is still the original ALIEN. The cut scenes add so much more to the story. The "Navigator", is still an investigative opportunity.

For defaultet-
ALIEN was dir by Ridley Scott [bladerunner]
ALIENS was James Cameron [terminator, abyss]
ALIEN 3 was David Fincher [fightclub, se7en]

all the other movies are crap cashing in on the original idea.

I second that! The scene with Dallas (the ships captain) in the airducts of the ship, moving through the "membrane" segments one by one is probably my favourite movie scene ever.

"oh, and that A4 scam about us doing the soundtrack still haunts us. I wish we would have done the job!!"

Especially since it is now to late, because there will never be another Alien movie after AVP2, thanks to the incredible Strauss Brothers (directors of AVP2). :-(

Can someone make a soundrack "Music Inspired by Alien(s)"

The special Effects in Aliens still hold up today. No fancy CGI needed.
The Atmosphere in Alien is unmatched.
I hold a special place in my heart for Alien 3 because I saw it at the Movies.
It had so much promise but fell short.

The best thing in Alien 4 was the boots and clothing worn by the cast.

AVP was stupid but fun.

Loved Alien

Aliens was ok - a tad plastic but meh, worked for me...

Liked Alien:Ressurrection too

AvP doesn't exist. period...

So, guess my rating would be:
1. Alien3
2. Alien
3. Aliens / Alien:Ressurection (shared)
...
99432. Sliding Doors
99433. not occupied, since AvP doesn't exists

Actually I think technically the first Alien should take top spot. I'd seen nothing like it before - the hardcore industrial space ships, weird alien that you hardly see at all and an amazing atmosphere. Aliens was easy after the first one had set the way.

stefan herwig told me once, that most of the time, the first album you listen to from a band, is the album you like the best. for me it was "too dark park" from skinny puppy, although cleanse, fold etc are brillant albums, but "too dark park" was always my favourite. same with front lines "caustic grip" or "some great reward" by depeche mode (eventhough violator is in my top5 of all time)
I guess, its the same with movies. I did see "alien3" in the theaters, before I saw all the other alien movies ( I grew up in eastern germany, just so you understand) and I guess, thats why I like the third one the best of all the alien movies. A4 doesnt really count for me. its just bad...

Alien.

I think it may be my favorite movie of all time. *blushes*

What was so effective about the first movie was that it hinged so much on interaction and tension between characters. Less action-packed, more drama. As much as I enjoyed Aliens and Alien3, neither quite captured the powerful mood of the first one.

My favorite scene is where Ripley is racing down the corridor while Lambert's voice could be heard over the intercom as she's being terrorized. There's a brief moment of a stuttering hyperventilation and then a blood-curling scream — which gets cut off abruptly. So much more scarier when everything is left to the imagination :)

Also, it's the GREATEST trailer ever! (now everybody will feel old when they watch this):

(Hmm, somebody ought to sample / mimic that ghostly echo in the trailer...)

People are fucking stupid. That article claims there are speculations that the "Pilot", has something to do with the Predator lifeform. But in light of the time period that Giger imagined the Pilot and subsequent ALIEN designs, there is no way it can be tied in to the same universe of thought. This is the reason why I enjoyed ALIEN much more than the sequels. It was such a deep concept. Giger was commissioned do design for the movie, but his ideas and ultimate designs overshadowed the storyline. There were so many avenues to take the story but our directors decided the stupid destructive animal factor was the most appealing. Then in all our wisdom the writers and directors decided we need to take the glorified human past time of hunting to a galactic scale. Fucking geniuses!

The biggest weakness of the human race is that we need to have everything make sense in our terms. This is going to be our downfall.

I agree with sume here.I always wanted to see an Alien mvie without sigourney Weaver.

resurrecting her was a bad idea anyway, she was tired of the role as well, and they could have set it up in an all-new environment and with an all-new human cast.

Bring in new alien species or whatever.Just dont resurrect her by cloning just to make her that Alien heroine. How l.a.m.e. .

I was in soe sort of maze and a horde of aliens was killing people in the group randomly.

It was very scary, yet very entertaining, and it went on as a "chain dream" for a couple of months. And it was the REAL Giger aliens hunting us. My actingwas ace too. ;-)

no, Aliens is certainly NOT perfect.
I think there is too much plastic involved. The production design was partially pretty lame. considering that Alien had only a fraction of the budget that Aliens had, it did look pretty weak - partially.

So, no, its not perfect. Alien 1 is near perfect. It has this one shot were Ripley shoots the alien out of the shuttle bay, and you can see for a moment that its just some guy in a costume. But given the production budget, this is probably much more forgivable than the plastic rifles and plastic spaceships from Aliens.

Nonethless, I admit this is *almost* splitting hairs.

Actually, the rifles were constructed from pressed metal and existing gun parts. The M41A pulse rifle, for instance, was constructed around a WWII-era Thompson submachine gun, with a SPAS-12 shotgun combined with a Remington shotgun used to create the grenade launcher. It was a fully-working gun. The Smart Gun was created from a modified German MP40 light machine gun and a steadi-cam harness, if I recall correctly.

Thats a nice piece of trivia, but it still looks like plastic to me. I liked the weapon design, btw. Maybe it was the way it was lit. In the SpaceCrfaft scene with the Sulaco approaching the Planet you can see the reflections on the plastic of the spaceship. Star wars was ten years younger and had better FX.
