In a direct attack on the dominant Apple iTunes music store, Amazon.com launched a new site today that features more DRM-free songs, higher quality, and lower prices than Apple. Amazon MP3 has over 2 million songs from more than 180,000 artists represented by over 20,000 major and independent labels including EMI and Universal Music.

Every song and album is available only in the standard MP3 format using the a high 256Kbps data rate for increased fidelity. These songs can be played on all existing music hardware devices including the iPod, Zune, iRiver, RAZR, etc…. No special software is needed to download the songs (other than a web browser), although Amazon provides a tool you can optionally use to install the songs into your existing iTunes or Windows Media Player music collection. So although Amazon MP3 competes with the iTunes store, it also fits seamlessly into the iTunes application which then syncs with your iPod.

The "scene" content on there is broadly similar to the "scene" content on eMusic at the moment.

Very doubtful, competition will only make iTunes better. Although I wont be using either.

Putting your music on eMusic is like giving it away. Half the music-related stuff I buy (a pack of CD-Rs being the latest thing) comes with some coupon for 35 free songs. Every netflix envelope has one on it too. I admit I use them, I'm not going to pass it up, but I feel a little guilty doing so...

At this point I think I've gathered up most the decent scene material on there with the coupons alone...

All good, except for the cheaper price! $1 was bad enough.

It's still not lossless. Until FLAC downloads are available no thanks.

I buy a lot of drum & bass from beatport, trackitdown.net and vaerious others. Beatport charges an extra dollar for .wav downloads on top of prices ranging from 1.49 to 2.49 for mp3s/aacs. Trackitdown.net charges around 3.50 for wavs when available. Honestly I would be happy buying flac or another lossless format for an extra .50 - $1 depending on the release. It's easier and cheaper to buy a 12" UK single in .wav for $6 than it is buying the media. It would be stupid to buy an album in FLAC for $30 when you can buy the CD for $12

Even if e-music does give away loads of free downloads the artists still get paid for those downloads.

The more legit stores the merrier.
256k is certainly not horrific, but their previews are still too short, and sound awful.

Now I just gotta get on CDBaby to work all of it to them for me... :)

I still like my CDs better but since I use Itunes to buy albums I wouldn't have bought on CD otherwise I will probably check Amazon out.

Plus I've been a long time client of Amazon and always satisfied.

I can only recoemmend e-music as well.

I-Tunes in my opinion is the most restrictive service of all. You can not separate the software from Quicktime player, wwhich continues to try to push all other players out of your system.

On top of that, no i-Tunes files are compatible with any other Players, which is the biggest form of restrictive DRM with its own agenda existing right now. Everyone blamnes the music industry for DRM and copy protection, but noone blames the apple.

Plus: my Ipod costed a shitload of money and is a piece of trash (3rd generation, battery live and general longevity).

Later generations might be better, but I had my fair share of rotten Apple for this decade....

@Stefan

What is a good alternative to an Apple Ipod? I am on the verge of buying a new mp3 player and the 160 gig one is looking nice simply to hold my entire collection. :/

Although I have to disagree with Stefan on the iPod being a piece of trash, my 30Gb video ipod is absolutely spot on, I can also use it for a week on one charge.

My Creative Zen's pretty old now, but I wouldn't change it for an ipod. Only problem is they only go up to 60gig at the moment.

I have had 2 ipods so far. My first was a 4th gen 40 gig that I replaced and gave to my parents. It still works fine and mom and dad love it. My 80 gig has worked spot on for the past year. I can't tell you how many portable CD players I went through before my first ipod, at least 6 or 7 from different brands, sony, panasonic, jvc etc. Most of those were absolute garbage and several of them scratched CDs.

I use the iTunes app on both the PC and Mac as a format converter/encoder. Works well and is free.
My wife and I use the iTunes store for the occasional one-off single track off of records we otherwise wouldn't want.
Her video iPod is flawless. My old off-brand 10GB MP3 player is sitting unused. I don't use hers, but I can't bear to use mine after using hers, it's just that clunky. The shuffle feature on it sucks, where the one on the iPod almost seems like AI in comparison. In other words, I'm thinking about getting myself a Nano or something to use in my car, as I seem to otherwise litter the passenger seat with CD cases.

But I digress... what I really wanted to mention is that I heard from CDBaby - they're working with Amazon to get all of their digital distro artists on Amazon's service right now. Could be a while before my stuff, for example, actually shows, though, as Amazon is now flooded with incoming material to prep for their site. Understandably. Also, interestingly, it seems they're partnering with Amazon to provide actual CD sales seamlessly for all physical CDs available at CDBaby. Pretty cool.

I'm super satisifed with my 30g Ipod, and I got a Zen NX a few years back and it was a piece of crap, so I might be going against accepted reviews on this one but really Ipod is a great product ever since they fixed the battery life question.

Amazon.com already carries the MP3's of various scene labels including alfa matrix (we signed the deal almost a year ago).

It might be the second best seller, I hope :). If they get close to what iTunes is able to sell then it's party time for the bands and the labels.
