Hi,

Just wondering if there are any female djs out there? Just looking for advice (from your point of view) I am just getting started, I’d like to put together a band at some point.

I notice from other forum topics that girls seem to have it a lot tougher than the guys as performers. I have a feeling that I would just be look at as a “novelty” and not taken seriously.

How do you beat the odds?

Toronto has some fantastic women Djs, I have never personally thought of female Djs as a novelty.

Good luck to you!

Most of our best and hardest DJs in these here parts of the midwest are teh ladeez:

k-y
Siberia
:EYG:

I swipe tracks from k-y and Siberia's setlists all the time:)

Less hard but still damn good:

joolz
Bloodlossgirl
Electrique
NYM

K-Y (aka quewhy) is on side-line too, so maybe she'll see this and post...

I was a dj last year, for me it was twice harder because I incorporated EBM, eletro & industrial music to the playlist , the club only played old school goth and darkwave.

Well I'm canadian but I live in Chile , Southamerica and this kind of music was a novelty down here, so I can be proud that I was the first electro, syth pop, ebm, industrial female DJ .

Good Luck!

Just a quick note:

We had a preparty for a fest today and half the DJs at it spinning were women:

Siberia
The Nurse (formerly Nurse Mengele, outta Conn.)
Kelowna (of DC's Chiarascuro)

They all kicked ass. Gender ain't important. Moving a floor is.:)

I've been told that the scene in Chile is even bigger than in Argentina...

For those who don't know much about these southern countries. It's like comparing US with Canada..Chile being the Canadians :P.

There are a couple of venues now not only playing goth and darkwave but also EBM, electro and industrial.

There are some chilean bands but more on the Noise side. I 'll see if I can find any links if your interested.

I'll be spinning music again at the end of the month at a party in a big venue :)

:-)

You can check out my playlists here (you better go the playlists of 2004 and ignore the top three playlists there if you're too tough :-p):
http://www.synthpop.co.il/

My specialization is Synthpop & FuturePop but I also DJ EBM when I get the chance... or 80's & 90's commercial music (as you can see at the link above). I like it all... But Synthpop is my real passion.

I'm from Israel & I'm the only female DJ for this music (there is someone who DJ Gothic music, someone who DJ 80's & Electroclash...). I don't think there is a difference between a male or a female DJ- if people like your taste in music- it doesn't matter (two) who's wearing the trousers... ;-)

Good luck to you, Jenna!

DJ Traumtanzer - http://www.myspace.com/traumtanzer_za
DJ Phoenix - http://www.myspace.com/djphoenixrising

Both are rather good. Or we find them to be... ;)

Phoenix is relentless in what she plays (noise and industrial) and Traumtanzer can do everything from the fabled electrogoth all the way through to industrial and noise.

if you play that combichrist (no offense andy, i own the album) song 1 more time imma fucking choke you!

but seriously. if you wanna be a DJ I'll give you the low down.

1. fake plastic dreads. get em!

2. fancy wielding goggles. wear em on your head, not over your eyes, silly

3. gas mask and/or cyber like medical masks

4. boots that go up to your knees or high with no less than 10 straps, buckles each and a 4 in platform sole. studs and spikes optional

5. skimpy clothing. leather, latex. something fetish like.

6. 100 of the current most popular scene songs. you only need 100 cause you're gonna play the same shit every week.

7. ???

8. Profit! your a DJ

chicks have it harder as musicians, not really DJs.

and the reason for this is because the chicks are always just a "pretty face" and a decent voice. there are some great female performers i really respect though. unter null, she is great for example.

then you have stuff like ayria, i dont think she makes any of the music herself, she's just a voice and image.

it's only harder for us because we are a rare breed!

Purrincess and Batty here in Cleveland are great. DyadFaerie, who was the Sat regular for a couple years here, is pretty cool as well. Then there was DJ Katzen from Toledo/BG, think she's in Michigan now?

In terms of the prominence of women as artists, DJs, etc. I think the goth/industrial scene has actually been pretty progressive...?

I have a feeling that I would just be look at as a “novelty” and not taken seriously.

That might be the case in some rave/techno scenes... I've seen some female DJs who spin topless. But in that case, they are doing it to themselves.

***

ayria writes her OWN music. music and lyrics.

I like Ayria, but I still think the first Epsilon Minus album is better than anything Jen or Bogart have done separately since. One gets the impression that wasn't a nice 'breakup', though... :x

***

i fucking loathe DJs and the fascination with them and the people aspiring to be one.

There is a difference between people who want to learn the music so that they can DJ... as opposed to those who want to DJ because they love the music and want to contribute to the community.

I think DJs are important in terms of setting the tone of a scene and introducing new music. And many DJs do a lot of other work on the side that you don't see in terms of promotion, web site work, making fliers, keeping up to date on music, etc. Getting to spin in the booth is the culmination of a lot of other hard work, or should be.

But modesty is a virtue. It shouldn't be about your own ego - quite the opposite, really.

I went to a Unrest recently (Brisbane, Australia), Acidtrixx (occasional Sideline member) did a great DJ set, played Amduscia, Rotersand, Centhron, Schallfaktor etc. As for other female DJs I think thats all I know of in this corner of the world. I don't think gender really is a problem, as long as you play good music and are a good DJ.

WHOA OLD THREAD!!!

Of course gender is not a problem. "People won't take you seriously"? Get real, all DJs do is play music. Wether you mix well, beatmatch or not, it doesn't make a difference to most people anyway. People will dance if they like the music, not because you're a guy.
If anything, it'll be easier for you to get "jobs" because female DJs are relatively rare.

Of course gender is not a problem. "People won't take you seriously"? Get real, all DJs do is play music. Wether you mix well, beatmatch or not, it doesn't make a difference to most people anyway.

This isn't true at all. I've been DJing with DJ Leslie (who runs what I think is north america's oldest industrial night), and people from out of town who don't know her will automatically assume I'm the DJ and she's just the girlfriend. People wait for me to go back into the booth if I'm not there before making requests, because they think she won't know any of the music, or won't be able to mix it, or only likes the fluffy stuff. When we DJ together, I get the strangers buying me drinks and the strangers yelling for more music after we shut down, not her.

My statement still applies... how is it a problem?

It's just people's prejudices, they don't have ANY effect on your practice as a DJ.

Sumez, people's prejudices have a big effect when you're trying to get bookings.

It may be a North American phenomenon, as well. I can't speak for Europe or anywhere else in the world, but it does seem like being a female DJ is a double-edged sword. On the one hand (as I was actually discussing with DJ Volvox when I was in Boston), you can get gigs purely on the basis of being a cute girl with headphones. On the other, a lot of people won't think you know your shit if you're a chick, since (as we see on this forum every so often) sexism continues to be an issue for the industrial scene. The problem is that neither of these take into consideration the possibility that any female DJ in question may actually be skilled and have a wide repertoire of music.

Also I have no idea who the hell Sundance and AmPm are, but they sound like house DJs anyway... heh, yup. Wrong forum, porkchop.

@Jairus
Are we still talking the industrial scene here??? I can't relate to your reality where DJs get booked by events that aren't local, based on their supposed DJ skills..

@Sumez: Leslie (and I) do DJ tours every few years, festivals (Maschinenfest/Kinetik/etc), industrial-techno or hardcore raves, etc. Aside from our weekly event, pretty much every gig she has is one where she's not a local, and gender is definitely a factor when it comes to booking, especially for the harder material.

the way people see you or judge your DJ skills has a lot to do with how you present yourself.
I received very awful anonymous emails insulting me and my skills when I started to Dj in Frankfurt.
this awful email thing seems to be quite normal for a scene girl is my impression, must be even worse for artists...
the consequence was that I had to shut down that email adress beside all the bad feelings I had about it.
plus i stopped to use female nick names in forums...
