Most of the bands you mention, although fantastic (i'm a Terminal State maniac), are in no way "old-school". To me, "old-school" means "back to basics" while Disharmony, NCE and Terminal State are complex, modern and don't rely on basic song structures. They don't look backwards. :-\

CAP and Volt are indeed old-school, though, but a bit boring.

Terminal State and new yelworC is great stuff.

CAP is by far one of the best of the bunch in my opinion for neo-old school sound.

I agree with the Militant Cheerleaders On The Move. The version of Freaks on the Alfa-Matrix comp is pretty much an old Nitzer Ebb song... Just listen to the way the speaker speaks and the nitzer ebb track just comes right to mind... he could have recorded the vox while listening to that old nitzer ebb track though... different words. Still a good track and still a great new band.

@electrofreak-this is what kills me. you go through the trouble of making a post about neo-oldschool bands that deserve more attention, but you don't offer links to any actual solid representation of these projects. and you blast terror EBM for being generic shite and that it's going down the drain. But obviously TEBM is on the bigger labels and has quite a tough foothold on what people want to hear. I honestly don't see it stepping aside for some obscure neo old school EBM act. Especially when chances are, the people that are making the TEBM are fans of the old school and want to represent all the same. Like myself, I grew up with the old school celtic circle, zoth ommog, wax tracks, nettwerk stuff and I love it. I still love it BUT I also love the new stuff.

I'm just saying that there should be harmony in order for any of this to work. We have a small scene as it is, we don't need to seperate every little click into it's own bunker and fight it out over whom is going to win the hill. It doesn't matter really..

anyhow, I checked out the one link[digital factor] you provided. Good stuff for the most part. I searched through the other ones on myspace and the only find was Depressive Disorder, which I did enjoy/added and will look into them further. Disharmony is a metal band from Cali and there was no results for last influence of the brain. I want to hear something more complex. Seems that the neo old school is very minimal and the production is kinda weak. If they are seriously going send send the helloktroers packing they need to spend more time on production or no one in the clubs is going to care...and that is honestly our scenes main focus..

Putrefy factor 7, Brain Leisure, early X Marks The Pedwalk, yelworC, Paracont, Splatter Squall Pierrepoint, Absent Minded, or course Nitzer Ebb and Front 242. They cannot be beat and are bad ass, even today..

How is it that Polygon has been overlooked!? This act certainly deserves more attention. And there's always the one album Mist did on Polymorph records entitled "Fragments of Transformation."

For my money, Page 12 was arguably the finest act on CCP. PF7 were pretty damned good, too. Yes yes, yelworC and Amgod also led that label to some impressive heights also.

I really wish Cycloon and Mindware were still active.

This is about me making observations about music as a long time EBM listener. I want to hear new stuff that is good and progressive-stuff that compares to the older artists that paved the road and got this scene to where it is in the first place. Production is a matter of taste and all I am saying is that the neo-old school bands need to work a bit on production-regardless of what old gear they are using to produce thier sound-if they are going to honestly send the TEBM bands packing.

@electrofreak-i'm not saying to called me names-i'm just saying refrain from it so we can actually discuss this stuff. This is not about me and my music. This is about how you feel neo-old school will take over the scene because Terror EBM is inferior and that I do not agree. It's that simple.

Edel may be a major label-I see they have Aliyaa and David Hasselhoff. But they are not major in our scene and are not on the DAC that I can see which is where the EBM Industrial Terror Future whatever clout really is. Can we at least agree to remain in the electro EBM world for the sake of this discussion?

@electroblue-we agree on PNE, Proceed, and old NE. but the above bands are better in production in my opinion. Some of the others you listed are very dry in thier mix and it makes them sound frail. Maybe mid based EQ mastering works well in the TV commercial land-but in the club-where our scene thrives-it makes a very small sonic footprint.

also this discussion IS about Terror EBM. These bands use hardware the same as soft-and all the bands we are discussing use some amount of distortion for some purposes..all of that is irrelevant.

Keep it minimal..bit dry on instruments esp.Drums...doesnt sound Frail...it sounds clean & punchy...you just need the master experience in mixing :-)

@electroblue-i don't watch TV or commercials much. Waste of time media bullshit. I do however recognize production values and as an observation it's the main thing I don't enjoy about neo-old school. I'm almost 28 and I like the "terror ebm" stuff because it tried something different, yes there is a lot of bands out there that sound terrible but there are a lot of good ones same goes for any kind of musik

Obviousily the "terror ebm" is doing good look at alfa matrix(Unter Null especially her cd sold very well for this scene) and dependent created a seperate label for "terror ebm" so obviousily there's a huge demand for it.

You're referring to the two VNV maxis released in 1990 (i know they were heavily influenced by NE "Belief" era). The first OFFICIAL VNV release was "Advance & Follow" cd (Discordia, 1995).We're talking about the classic old school EBM bands of the mid-late 80's (DAF, F242, Borghesia, SP, FLA, Numb,The Klinik,Vomito Negro,A;grumh,Pankow,SA42,The Neon Judgement etc).Leather Strip, Yelworc,XMTP,Placebo Effect belong to the third wave (check my thread "Old School EBM vs. Dark Elektro" for more info)

Terror EBM is popular among the young crowd(I actually own Tactical Sekt,grendel &Aslan Faction cd's) but all the SC wannabe's sound alike.I know many veteran rivetheads who stopped going to electro clubs cuz they can't stand the trance-infested "floorslammers".I'm glad that classic electro acts are staging a comeback& i'll always support the old school scene.To each his own mate.

a;grumh is very funny and clever.
They do a great rendition of "Another Brick In The Wall".

I buy a fair share of new music, and I find that some of it I really like a lot, but it always seems when I want to listen to something I revert back to the stuff that got me into this music in the first place. There is a lot good stuff out there. I guess in my old age (36) I have become very selective, rather than buy CD/LPs at will.
One good thing about a lot these elder bands is that they are getting back together or are re-releaseing some of their rarities. Now someone who wants to hear Siglo XX at their best can buy a copy of their "1980-1986" CD which has many of their early classics on it that were previously next to impossible to get IE: Antler Tracks 1 & 2. Also Portion Control releasing their back catalogue in box set form. Others like The Neon Judgement and The Klinik are making it easier to hear the classics.
Some people hate this because these re-releasing seem like the music you hold in the highest regard can suddenly be ripped out of your collection. Your formats are nolonger sacred. Thats another discussion.

It is nice hear new bands pay tribute to the elders. I miss that sound. Maybe if some of the new comers have a chance to hear more of the classics they will appreciate more what many of the bands in this thread are all about. I think there is enough diversity out there to keep people happy. It is just a question of what you like to listen to.

Its annoying that the cd has almost no info on it or on the cover.

Listen to Severe Illusion and you won´t find a top notch production. But who the fuck cares? Some love it, some think it´s just another distorted band not signed to a major with average songs.
Terrorbanana Hellektro is boring, the same with the so called neo old school imitators. Most of them sound weak. PNE sounds TOP NOTCH and he is one of the few who can call themselves old-school!

Brrr, Nader, wrong question to a wrong time. I'm currently not very active by producing music. I also think about to revamp all stuff completely... we'll see. No real tendency here, when this will happen, but it's quite impressing to come out these days with several remix works, like this fine items:

2. Cyclone B - "Demolished" EP-CD (I did a remix on "Deathember")

Old school bands emerged in the mid 80's:Front 242, A;grumh,Skinny Puppy,FLA,Borghesia,A Split Second,The Klinik,Vomito Negro,Insekt, SA 42, Pankow, Fatal Morgana etc. Neo-old school bands (Severe Illusion,CAP, KIFOTh,Last Influence of Brain to name a few) are heavily influenced by Belgian & Canadian electro acts of the late 80's.

I commented on the "recently bought cds" thread how much I was impressed by Container 90's Scandavian Masters. An awesome cd. What impresses me most is when he has to actually sing he does so perfectly.

They talk about not being on a label in the first song and while I admire their conviction, labels are retarded for not picking them up. Infinitely better than Combichrist for what they are trying to accomplish.

i have a ton of old-school influences, i'm just not sure how much that translates in my sound. it definitely varies from track to track. you can certainly hear the dive influence in 'shadow machine', and the skinny puppy/fla in 'wish you dead', etc.

Instans (Severe Illusion side-project) "Common Ground" cd is out now!

Dark danceable EBM/electro hailing from Sweden. The band consists of Ulf Lundblad and Fredrik Djurfeldt who both have been collaborating in different constellations before getting together to create instans in the fall of 2004. The duo met in Göteborg, Sweden, in the year 2000 and started the harsh EBM act Severe Illusion. They are still working under that moniker and has until today released two albums, as well as an CDM and a split vinyl lp together with electro terrorists The Pain Machinery. After finishing recording the second album for Severe Illusion, the members felt they needed to rinse their brains from the messy beats and broken down melodies that had surrounded them for so long. Instans was born. Totally danceable and with strong, minimalistic melodies the music of the new band was still well within the borders of the modern electronic music, but yet marked a new direction in the artists progress. Combining the forces of haunting rhythmic and distorted vocals instans sets a new standard for hard electronics.
