Interview of Mildreda: the first featured band from 108!

The new volume of “Endzeit Bunkertracks”  (the 7th already, available right here) will be released once again as a deluxe 4CD carton box featuring 68 songs mixing dark-electronics, EBM, dark-electro-pop and related genres. The box also contains an extended 32 page booklet masterfully designed by Japanese designer Tomoki Hayasaka. Next to the 4CD there also is a bonus download card giving you access to some 50 additional songs! Side-Line once again has been asked by Alfa-Matrix to recommend some interesting artists.  That’s why we decided to power this new volume by featuring 10 short interviews of bands that you’ll discover on this new volume plus an extra interview by the “Endzeit Bunkertracks” instigator Séba Dolimont.

SL: From Diskonnekted to Mildreda sounds like 2 different sonic universes set up by one and the same artist. How do you manage this musical schizophrenia and how did you come to set up Mildreda?

Jan Dewulf: Mildreda was my first musical project in the 90’s. At the turn of the century I started Diskonnekted because I wanted something fresh and more modern instead of the dark and cold industrial beats of Mildreda. But now I feel the exact opposite: Diskonnekted doesn’t inspire me anymore. It’s much more fun and inspiring to revisit my personal roots again. And it all comes naturally and spontaneous. Btw, it’s no schizophrenia. No, it is much worse than that. I am also working on some guitar post-industrial/post-shoe gaze stuff with Your Life On Hold, and even on ambient now and then.

SL: What does the sampler series “Endzeit Bunkertracks” evoke to you and what do you expect from this feature?

Jan Dewulf: “Endzeit Bunkertracks” has always been a very ambitious project bringing together so many bands while keeping things on a high quality level. It’s a blueprint for DJ’s and a great quest discovering new bands.

SL: Mildreda got the opportunity to be the first band of this sampler. How does it feel to be in pole position?

Jan Dewulf: It was a big surprise for me to see Mildreda as the opening track of this new compilation. I was really honored and feel very happy about it. I salute Séba for this, as he’s always been very supportive to me, even when I was a pain in the ass sometimes. The track is quite evil and dark. I am sure the dramatic intro fits the compilation well.

SL: What brings the future for Mildreda?

Jan Dewulf: I am finalizing a first album and would to love to release it later this year. It’s going to be mean and dark. I feel confident about it because the sound of Mildreda has a certain uniqueness. Throughout the years I gathered myself a comfy music studio and now I can finally make the tunes and sounds like they were meant to be when I started Mildreda back in the days.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
